Long Tailed Parrot

Emma Fordyce MacRae's paintings are the result of her meticulous technique. She developed a complex method for preparing her supports and for building up the paint in her compositions.

For the support, she often used paperboard to which she applied a layer of gesso, creating a hard, plaster-like surface. In early works, such as Gloucester Garden or the Long Tailed Parrot the texture of the broad brushstrokes of this ground is visible through the thinner layers of paint laid on top and it becomes part of the composition.
